The determined lines of the Bristol Beaufighter made it instantly recognisable in its many guises from the night skies of Britain to the Norwegian Fjords, over the Mediterranean, the Balkans and North Africa to India and the Pacific. Though perhaps best known to the public as the night-fighting mount of wartime legend ‘Cat’s Eyes Cunningham, the majority of Beaufighters were not night fighters at all, but long range escort fighters, rocket firing ground attack aircraft and torpedo bombers. This visual history of the 55 RAF squadrons that used the Beaufighter makes spectacular use of over 300 authentic wartime images, many previously unpublished, to illustrate each squadron in turn. Extended captions, details of bases, marks of aircraft used and code letters complete a visually stunning tribute to the RAF’s original multi-role combat aircraft. The stories of the men who flew it are represented by first-hand accounts: Wing Commander Wight-Boycott recalls shooting down three German bombers in one night, Flight Sergeant Nicholl gives a graphic account of his first shipping strike in a Norwegian Fjord, and Wing Commander Gatward describes his daring solo mission to drop a Tricolour over the Arc de Triomphe in Paris before the eyes of the Germans. Coverage is also given to the Australian Beaufighters, the American night fighter units and post-war use. Four pages of colour side views by noted technical illustrator Mark Rolfe provide colour reference to the different schemes worn by Beaufighters around the world.
