The City of London was founded by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago, on the north bank of the Thames which had fresh water and a place from which to build a bridge. Sacked by Boudicca, abandoned by the Romans, destroyed by fire, London managed to be, by medieval times, a flourishing port with many churches and a vast cathedral. Its bridge, lined by shops, was one of the wonders of the world. However most of that medieval splendour went up in smoke in 1666 during the Great Fire to rise again as a great economic force of the British Empire.
